Aspetuck Land Trust offers numerous educational and specialty hikes for adults and children that are open to everyone and offer a great way to explore and learn more about the diversity of over 1,700 acres of open space in our community.

GEOLOGY & NATURAL HISTORY HIKE @ Trout Brook Valley

When: March 18th, Sunday, 9:30am–noon
Location: Jump Hill, Easton
Walk: Join Norwalk Community College Anthropology professor Ernie Weigand on a walk through prehistoric times as he points out notable landforms and rock outcrops and notes how they affected human occupation of the area both during prehistoric and historic times.
Park:  Parking lot on Rt. 58 or roadside on Country Club Lane.

OWL INVENTORY WALK @ TBV Orchard

When: March 31, Saturday, 7pm – 9pm
Location: Freeborn Rd, off Rte 58 (Black Rock Tpke.) past Bluebird Restaurant. 
Walk: Join noted bird expert Milan Bull, Senior Director of Science & Conservation, CT Audubon Society for a special owl hike in the orchard.  Come prepared to learn about the unique behavior and habitat of owls. 
Park: Rte 58 (Black Rock Tpke) past Bluebird Restaurant to Freeborn Rd.  Turn left on Freeborn. When woods stop on left (first house lot) look to right, there will be a dirt road thru the woods. Drive into this road to blueberry bushes to park.

EARTH DAY VERNAL POOL SURVEY @ Trout Brook Valley

When: April 22, Sunday, 1– 3pm
Age Range: Adults & Children ages 4-10 years old.  Parent is required to attend.
Location: Bradley Road Entrance to TBV, Weston
Walk: Interested adults and parents with children will join conservation biologist Dr. Twan Leenders to learn about the little creatures that live in the vernal pools, which form the basis of the forest food chain.   This will be a hands-on activity as children will collect samples and discuss what they find in the vernal pools.
Park: Parking at Bradley Rd entrance to Trout Brook Valley, Weston

MOSS HIKE @ Trout Brook Valley

When: April 29th, Sunday, 1-3pm
Location: Bradley Road Entrance to TBV, Weston. 
Walk:  Join Dr. Jessica Budke, postdoctoral research fellow in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCONN, to learn about the variety of moss in Trout Brook Valley.  See her “Bryology Blog - Moss Plants and More” at http://www.mossplants.blogspot.com

SPRING TREE HIKE @ Haskins Preserve, Westport

When: May 5th, Saturday, 3:30-5pm
Location: Haskins Preserve, Westport
Walk:  Come and enjoy the beauty and serenity of Westport's Haskins preserve.  Join tree expert Roger Knoop to learn about the unique tree specimens, many in spring bloom, at Haskins Preserve, a 16-acre hidden gem.
Park: Haskins Preserve is on Green Acre Lane off South Compo Rd. 
Park inside the black gates.

FLYFISHING @ Warner Anglers Preserve

When: May 20th, Sunday, 12-2pm
Location: Warner Angler Preserve, Easton
Walk: Join Ron Merly, President Nutmeg Chapter of Trout Unlimited, and avid fishermen Ross Ogden & Mike Tritchonis, for an afternoon of flyfishing at the Warner Anglers Preserve on the Mill River.  Bring your own rod, or borrow one, and learn about this unique and beautiful preserve, dedicated to the conservation of native trout.
Park: On Riverside Lane off South Park Road.  Walk south down South Park about 300 feet to the preserve on river.

BIRDS:  Migrants & Residents @ TBV Orchard

When: May 27, Sunday, 9– 11am
Location: Freeborn Road Entrance to TBV Orchard, Easton
Walk: Learn about birds from Conservation Biologist Dr. Leenders from the CT Audubon Society.  This hike will focus on the many species that migrate through TBV as well as year round residents.  The walk will take place in the spectacular orchard, with views to Long Island Sound
Park:  Go left on Freeborn Rd. When woods stop on left (first house lot) look to right, there will be a dirt road thru the woods. Look for hike sign. Drive into this woods road to blueberry bushes.

NATIONAL TRAILS DAY@ Trout Brook Valley

When: June 2nd,Saturday, 9–12noon
Location: Bradley Road Entrance to TBV, Weston. 
Walk: Join ALT Board Member Lisa Brodlie and Princie Falkenhagen (ALT President) on an exploration through the heart of TBV near some of the many vernal pools.  Hiking through both the Crow Hill & Jump Hill areas of TBV, this strenuous hike includes the red trail which overlooks the Saugatuck Reservoir. Experienced hikers only & dogs on leash are welcome. Flora will be highlighted along with historical information.  Bring a water bottle.  Please arrive before the beginning hike time.

RARE VEGETATION OF TBV @ Trout Brook Valley

When: June 17, Sunday, 1– 3pm
Location: Bradley Road Entrance to TBV, Weston. 
Walk: Learn about the unique vegetation in TBV from Conservation Biologist Dr. Leenders from the CT Audubon Society.  This guided hike will reveal the many rare and special plants that grow in Trout Brook Valley.

Note:   To reserve a spot, call or email RSVP contact with your name, the date(s), and number in party. If unsure of weather, call 203-331-1906 the morning of hike for status. No rain date.  Wear appropriate clothes, shoes, and bring a water bottle. There is a 30 person maximum per hike except where noted.  All hikes easy to moderately difficult.
