Join Aspetuck Land Trust friend, highly skilled wildlife photographer and experience bird watcher Jory Teltser to search for and identify local birds at the Newman-Poses Preserve in Westport.
When he first started birding in 2010, Jory was only 9. Now Jory is a rising junior at Oberlin College and despite his age, Jory has the experience of a seasoned ornithologist, describing how bird populations began shifting long before he picked up a pair of binoculars. You can check out the photography and read about Jory on his website: Jory Teltser Photography.
Jory said that birding has taken him to all 169 towns in Connecticut and has opened his eyes to ecosystems right in his backyard. Sherwood Island is only a five-minute drive from his family home.
As a student at staples Jory would try to get his homework done Friday night and then bird Saturday and Sunday. In 2018, Jory set a goal of seeing 300 unique bird species in the state, which he accomplished, even if it meant skipping school a couple of times to drive across the state to find a rare bird.
The Newman Poses Preserve was named after actor Paul Newman and Lillian Poses, the first woman to graduate from NYU Law School. The Newman and Poses families who lived nearby donated the land for this nature preserve and enjoyed walking on the property.
