American Beech Tree (Fagus grandifolia)

American beech is a sturdy, imposing tree, 50-80 ft. tall, with a maximum height of 120 ft. Its bark is very smooth and light gray, remaining so as the tree ages. Beechnuts are important food for wildlife.
American Cranberry Shrub (Vaccinium macrocarpon)

Large Cranberry is native low-growing vine, ground cover or trailing evergreen shrub (less than 1 ft. high ) and is usually grown in wet bog conditions. They spread by rhizomes and can be difficult to transplant. Requirements are full sun and moist but well-drained soils and they can tolerate periodic flooding, but can't tolerate heat and drought.

If the fauna of New England held a little popularity contest for โfavorite shrub,โ you can bet American Hazelnut would be one of the top contenders. A whole host of insects will munch on the leaves, while the nuts provide a tasty snack to our mammalian and avian friends. This shrub will be happiest on the woodโs edge and should be planted in multiples to ensure pollination. You can expect the fruit within 2-3 years after planting. 15โ tall.

A renowned horticulturist, Dr. Michael Dirr once said: โA garden without a viburnum is akin to life without music or art.โ Viburnums do not get the credit the deserve: wonderful large white spring blooms, cold hardy, full leafy form, what is not to love? It attracts gamebirds, songbirds, small mammals, Eastern Bluebird, Northern Flicker, Gray Catbird, and American Robin. A 6-8 ft. shrub, sometimes taller, with multiple, erect-arching stems in a loose, round habit. White, flat-topped flower clusters are followed by dark blue berries. Lustrous, dark-green foliage turns yellow to wine-red in fall. Moist soil.
Beach Plum Shrub (Prunus maritima)

Yum. There are some fruits you canโt get at the grocery but you can grow in your yard. Youโll need more than one to ensure proper pollinator thus fruit. Beyond the fruit, Beach Plumbs are excellent erosion-control that can grow in poor soil. If it is the fruit you are after, full sun is a must. According to a Growers Guide published by UMass Extension: โA wild beach plum may bloom profusely for one year but not the next. The reasons for this are not well understood.โ

Bottlebrush buckeye is a handsome shrub that has memorable long fluffy white flower clusters in early July. It is useful as an understory planting in woodland gardens, as a specimen plant, or in a shrub border. Drought sensitive; water in dry periods.
Use only in large-scale plantings. Ideal for understory planting in native and woodland gardens.

Chokecherry is widely regarded as an important wildlife food plant and provides habitat, watershed protection, and species diversity.Chokecherry is remarkably shade tolerant and has impressive resilience under variable growing conditions. A large, deciduous shrub or small understory tree, choke cherry grows 20-30 ft. tall and often forms thickets. Dense clusters of white flowers are followed by red fruit ripening to dark purple from August to September (north).

If you have visited Gilbertieโs Farm before, surely you have noticed the field of witch hazel growing on the left as you approach the barn. This witch hazel is used in a variety of cosmetics. The plant itself, is easy going and is multi-stemmed and wide by nature, but can take significant pruning. Among pollinator fanatics, the plant is perhaps best know for its late season yellow flowers which provide crucial food when little else is blooming. 15โ-20โ, great for the woodโs edge.
Drooping Leucothoe Shrub (Leucothoe catasbei)

Drooping Leucothoe or โMountain Doghobbleโ is a 3 to 6 feet tall evergreen shrub with sharply toothed leaves on arching stems. From late April into June, bell-shaped, white flowers that are almost fluorescent. This plant is naturally found in very wet places such as ravines and streambanks.

To get the best floral and fall foliage display, give Fothergillas as much sunshine as possible. It makes a great low, flowering hedge!
Eastern Red Cedar Tree (Juniperus virginiana)

Dense pyramid shape excellent for windbreaks and screens. Birds love its berries. Medium green foliage. Likes full sun. Tolerant of most soils. Matures at 40' - 50'. Loved by cedar waxwings.
Elderberry Shrub (Sambucus canadensis)

Elderberry prefers full sun and can grow 8-10 feet tall in moist to wet soil. Their beautiful white flowers bloom in late spring or early summer and attract bees and other pollinators (and the elder flower is also used for culinary and medicinal purposes). Our native species is also an important host plant for over 40 species of butterflies and moths. The fruits ripen in late August and are relished by migrating songbirds.

Bright green leaves turn a yellow fall color. Older trees develop a chalky white bark that does not peel. A good selection for poor soils and other difficult sites, it also demonstrates some resistance to bronze birch borer 20-40' tall.

Whether youโre interested in Highbush Blueberry for springโs delicate white flowers, summerโs rewarding fresh fruit or fallโs vibrant red color you wonโt be disappointed! A low, straggling shrub, usually 6 in. to 2 ft. tall and wide. Multiple stems; twiggy branches. Glossy foliage turns from red-green in spring to dark blue-green in summer to maroon-purple in fall. Small, white, pink-tinged, bell-shaped flowers are followed by edible blue fruit. The berries are relished by wildlife and humans alike.

The distinctive, purplish-pink autumn foliage makes this one of our handsomest shrubs. Maple-leaf arrow-wood is a low, densely branched shrub, 4-6 ft. tall and 3-4 ft. wide. Flat-topped clusters of white flowers are followed by berries turning from red to blue-black.

White Meadowsweet grows 3-6 ft tall in a variety of habitats. You can find it growing on many sites with nearly full sun. Although this shrub seems to prefer moist soil, it can also be found in fairly well-drained soil.

This shade-tolerant North American shrub has gorgeous flowers that bloom in late spring and early summer. A close relative of rhododendrons and azaleas, itโs an excellent choice for a shady garden. Itโs also evergreen, 6-15'. The flower cups look like origami rice bowls...the state shrub of CT.

After the Boston Tea Party, we turned to this plantโs root for a substitute to the expensive Indian Tea which was dumped overboard. Today, we turn to this plant for its ornamental and ecological value. New Jersey Tea forms a mound shape and blooms white in June. Animals that may pay your plant a visit might include: caterpillars, bees, azure butterflies and even a wild turkey! Young plants take time and energy building their root system, but after its established your New Jersey Tea should take off! Plants thrive in sun and average to dry soil.

This plant is thought of as the โforsythia of the wildsโ because its early spring flowering gives a subtle yellow tinge to many lowland woods where it is common. 6-12'. Spicebush is a fast-growing shrub, useful in moist, shady places. A small amount of sun yields a bush with better form and more berries.Attracting butterflies is not just about having the right flowering plants, but also the right plants for caterpillars! The spicebush swallow tail butterfly spends its childhood on a spicebush. No spicebush, no butterfly. Beyond being a crucial pollinator host plant, spicebush provides tasty berries for birds. Before leafing out, spicebush develops delicate, edible yellow flowers. In the summer it has a beautiful horizontal, leafy form, to return to its equinox color of yellow. A shrub which is commonly found in the Adirondack Mountains, has pink to rose-purple flowers. Its flower clusters are narrower and tighter than those of the White Meadowsweet. In addition, the lower leaf surface on the Steeplebush is covered with dense woolly hairs. Steeplebush also has a more pronounced preference for wet soils, and is usually found in stream-side meadows, wet thickets, ditches, peatlands, swamps, and marshes. 4 ft.

Sweet pepperbush, also known as summersweet, grows in wet woodlands and marshes, as well as along streams and seashores. It reaches around 3 to 8 feet tall with a 4- to 6-foot spread. During summer it produces long, fragrant flower spikes that tend to attract butterflies and bees.
Swamp Azalea Shrub (Azalea viscosum)

Swamp azalea grows to 3โ-5โ with open branching. May and June bring lovely white to light pink flowers. You can expect some visits from hummingbirds, butterflies, and a specialist native bee (Andrena cornelli) As the name suggests, it likes moist soils: perfect for the woodland edge. This is also good plant to use next to the home.
Swamp Rose Shrub - Pink (Rosa palustris)

Swamp Rose occurs along stream banks, in swamps and marshes. It grows best in slightly acidic, wet to moist soils in partial shade or full sunlight. Rosa palustris is extremely fragrant and the pink blooms last for six to eight weeks in midseason, generally June through July. The fruit (rose hip) is red and fleshy on the outside with a mass of seeds inside the rose hip. The rose hips are eaten and spread by birds.

As the name suggests, this oak is found growing wild in low-lying and swampy areas โ often moist bottomlands or river banks. But it grows just as well in an urban or suburban setting, with tolerance to compacted soil and (perhaps surprisingly) drought. The swamp white oak is a great choice for a shade or street tree, with the ability to grow at a moderate pace and live more than 300 years. Itโs the kind of tree you plant for not only your enjoyment but for the benefit of generations to come.
Sweet Azalea Shrub - White (Azalea arborescens)

Tall 8'-12' and fast-growing for a native azalea. It is one of the hardiest native white azaleas, and one of the last azaleas to bloom in the spring. Drought sensitive, it requires moist, partially shaded sites.

Sweetgale is a low-growing, 2-4 ft. high, deciduous, bushy shrub with glossy, dark-green to grayish foliage. The long leaves are sweet-scented. 6-12' wet to moist soil. The sweet-scented foliage of Sweet Gale is often used as an insect repellant.

One of the most attractive native trees around. Summer leaves are a dark green with a high-gloss appearance, but the most spectacular part of this tree is the fall foliage with many shades of yellow, orange, bright red, purple or scarlet that may appear on the same branch. 30-50' prefers well drained soil.

If blooms are your thing, Rosa Virginiana has a show for you. Beautiful, 3 inch pink roses bloom in the summer months to eventually give way to the nutritional fruit of rose hips. Does well in sun to part sun and tolerates a wide range of soil conditions but prefers moist soils. Virginia Rose will grow to be four to six feet in height.

Extremely showy in late fall and early winter when covered with their bright red fruit, these shrubs are either male or female--a trait typical of the holly family. Birds are readily attracted to them. Since this shrub grows in both wet and dry sites, it is an adaptable naturalizer.

Jim Dandy is a malnee plant and is generally grown only as a pollinator for female winterberry plants to produce berries. One Jim Dandy will generally be sufficient for pollinating 9-10 female plants. Prune to shape in early spring just before new growth begins.
