Southport Preserves
Wildflower Preserve
Aspetuck Land Trust’s smallest preserve is an official Monarch Way Station with many native plants on the property that provide precious food for pollinators like the Monarch Butterfly. This is a lovely spot to observe wildflowers and butterflies, where you can sit on a teak bench dedicated to Southport conservationists Raphael and Roberta Hodgson. It is conveniently located on Westway Road across from entrance to the historic Pequot Library in Southport. In the spring of 2020 we will be turning this property into a model native landscape demonstration preserve for our Green Corridor Initiative and the property will be on the Pequot Library Southport Garden Stroll. We want to demonstrate to homeowners how native plants can both beautify and increase biodiversity in our home landscapes.
Acorn Lane Upland Preserve
Enjoy trails through woods, wetlands, and an intermittent stream, which also provides access to the town’s 38-acre Mill Hill Open Space.
Old Hay Fields
Beautiful old haying fields at the corner of Morehouse and Cedar bordered with crabapple trees and stone walls. A reminder of the area’s farming days in this lovely area of Southport.
Southport Beach Preserve
Preserved in 2015 with support from Southport Conservancy and the Burton Family, this 0.7 acre property was purchased by Aspetuck Land Trust to preserve the character of Southport and prevent development on Pequot Avenue across from Southport Beach.
Southport Park
Owned by Sasquanaug Association, we include this preserve on our website because the Aspetuck Land Trust was involved in it's design and rehabilitation. The park offers more than 1/2 mile of trails with benches, play picnic areas, and a fort. Information kiosks and well-marked trails make it appealing to all ages.
